GDPR and data privacy – the issue nobody can ignore

As May 2018 approaches, and GDPR becomes a statutory requirement, organisations across the UK and continental Europe are mobilising rapidly to comply or face damaging penalties. A research study has revealed that as many as 50% of medium and large firms in the UK have not yet started to tackle this issue head-on*.

In a world of cloud-based services and ‘bring-your-own devices’, issues of personal and corporate security become ever more intractable. Urgent attention is required to align IT architectures with the way work is done in order to protect the organization from cyber attacks and to meet new privacy mandates such as the GDPR.

To prepare for the GDPR, a fundamental review is required as to where data is stored, how it is transferred through public and private networks, and the context in which it is accessed and processed. Now more than ever, IT leadership needs to take on accountability for data stewardship in its many forms.
